A TO Z CHALLLENGE: LETTER F

Some of the things found in the world today actually have been around for quite some time. Here's a look at some food items that have been around since the 1800's.  Did YOU know when these items were created?

 flapjacks

FLAP JACKS: Another name for pancakes.

FIXINS: Any dressings or trimmings added to the basic meal.

Blurb: Addie comes from a long line of readers or "story catchers" as her family likes to call themselves. Every time Addie tries to catch a story on her own the wiggly words play tricks on her. She tries different ways to make those words sit still but it will take a little faith for Addie to become the next STORY CATCHER.

  1. What is the origin of flap jacks, do you suppose. If someone says flap jacks, I absolutely know what they are, but it isn't a word that would have come to mind unaided for me. It feels like a cowboy word... And at our house our special holiday breakfast is flap jacks and fixins though we call it pancakes and apple soup (apple soup being stewed apples, cinnamon and brown sugar going by a name we came up with when my son, then two, would only eat soup)

    1. Hi Hart and welcome to my blog! Here is what ASK.COM says the origin of the word "flapjack" comes from..."The name flapjacks originated in the 1600s in England. The 'flap' part of flapjack dates back to the 1300s when 'flap' was used in place of 'to flip.'" Your holiday meal sounds delicious...;~)

  2. I have heard the term fixins, might have been the Waltons or some other show :). I have never heard of pancakes called flap jacks before - to me a flapjack is a tray-bake made from oats and syrup and gooey things like that :)

  3. Once Mom made me a pancake all my own! Has Tommy ever had one? Mine was the size of a silver dollar. Mom's were the size of a Buick!

    Love and licks,
    Cupcake
