Title: Cheese Belongs To You!
Author: Alexis Deacon
Illustrator: Viviane Schwarz
Publisher: Candlewick Press
Ages: 4-8
"THIS IS RAT LAW: Cheese belongs to YOU. Unless a BIG rat wants it."
Synopsis: Cute tale of what can happen when one rat wants a piece of cheese belonging to another rat. Rat law seems to favor the bullies of the world until someone remembers the Golden Rule and everyone comes away a cheesy winner!
Why I liked it: Rats don't usually make good subject matter but in this cute story they are very relatable, especially if you have a child currently dealing with bullies. The illustrations are simple but the expressions on the faces of the rats help tell the story and I loved the cheesy ending.
Hi Donna,
ReplyDeleteI'm loving your posts. I've got a toddler niece with another one on the way so you're giving me great ideas for birthday and Christmas presents :)

Hi Donna .. Rat's Rule does sound a fun way of telling a story and at least making the kids aware of bullying, but the story will be so much fun .. I used to love Felix the Cat .. and Mickey Mouse .. with their cheeses and story lines ...
ReplyDeleteLovely sounding story .. cheers Hilary
Hi Hilary! I wasn't really sure I was going to like this book when I first chose it. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I actually enjoy it...;~)

This sounds like a great book to teach kids about bullying, and in an interesting way.
ReplyDeleteHi Laura! I agree...the theme is rather subtle. I have a feeling children will enjoy the story so much that someone will need to explain the comparisons but then that what good SHOWING vs TELLING is all about...;~)

Hi Donna, that would be a good little book to have around. Our family had pet rats for a while, much to my initial reluctance but as usual I ended up being caretaker and became very fond of the things. :)
ReplyDeleteHi Cecilia! I had many pets when I was growing up in the swamps of Louisiana and when my son was born, I made sure to have a lot of critters around the house as well but never thought of have a rat for a pet. I'm so glad my son never thought about it either...;~)
