Some of
the things found in the world today actually have been around for quite
some time. Here's a look at some food and entertainment items that have
been around since the 1800's. Did YOU know when these items were
created/invented?
CARAMEL: A candy made from sugar or syrup which has been heated over a low flame until it turns brown.
Blurb: Addie comes from a long line of readers or "story
catchers" as her family likes to call themselves. Every time Addie
tries to catch a story on her own the wiggly words play tricks on her.
She tries different ways to make those words sit still but it will
take a little faith for Addie to become the next STORY CATCHER.

I didn't realize that's when caramel was invented. Neat factoid!
ReplyDeleteVisiting you back, from the A to Z Challenge. Have fun blogging!
Hi Catherine and welcome to my blog! I didn't realize caramel had been around that long ago either...;~)

Never realized a capon was a castrated male chicken (wouldn't that be a rooster?). I try to learn something new every day so thank you.
ReplyDeleteHi and welcome to my blog! I'm pretty sure roosters can still have "little roosters"...;~)

Never read about food when you are hungry! Now I need to go get chicken and caramel! LOL!
ReplyDeleteHi Ronda and welcome to my blog! Well, chicken IS my favorite food so I would be okay with that...;~)

It's always fascinating to me to see the creative ways people in history found to make their food interesting (in the absence of modern technology and "conveniences." Sometimes, living on a sailboat, we have to go back to some of the old ways. (--Jaye from Life Afloat)
ReplyDeleteHi Jaye and welcome to my blog! I'm sure you have very interesting ways of "making do" when your home is on a boat...;~)

I'm here thanks to the #AtoZChallenge. Didn't know about the capon, but am very familiar with caramel! What a fun alphabetical list you have going here.
ReplyDeleteHi Ally and welcome to my blog! I found it very interesting checking out what people used to eat...and some still do. I just checked out your blog and it looks like we are both looking at food for this challenge. Just wait until you see what they were eating in the 1800's for some of the lesser used letters like X and Z...;~)

ReplyDeleteHi Joanne and welcome to my blog! Funny thing about caramel...as much as I love it, I only eat it at Halloween...;~)

Funny, I'd have thought they'd have been around much earlier - well capons anyway. Caramel only when we discovered sugar ;)
ReplyDeleteHi Jemima and welcome to my blog! Funny, but it makes me wonder when exactly we discovered sugar...;~)

This made me think of the first time I ate Kentuck Fried Chicken. Yummy!!

Interesting, haven't come across the word capon in ages.
ReplyDeleteHi J.L. and welcome to my blog! While I had heard of capon before this challenge, I didn't know of HOW they became capons...;~)

mmmmmm....could use some caramel right about now. I found it so interesting that you stopped by my blog and actually caught my breath when I saw your name...it comes with a story. My dad grew up and went to school in Rahway, NJ. He admired a girl named Donna Martin. He said that she was such a kind person and treated everyone equally and with a smile. When it came time for my parents to name me I was named after her because she had made such an impression on him. I didn't find this out until I was in my forties Would you by any chance have any relatives in NJ named Donna Martin? I've often wondered if she were still alive (my dad is in his late seventies and I'm sure Donna would be around that age too) It would be wonderful to meet her...and maybe even bring her to say hello to my dad. :) Thanks for listening :)
ReplyDeleteHi Donna and welcome to my blog! What an interesting story you shared. Now to add a slight twist to this otherwise cute story. I met and fell in love with a guy almost thirty years ago. He had been married before to a girl named...wait for it...Donna who then became the FIRST Donna Martin. She was an almost carbon copy of me (or me one of her?) and they lived in the New York area before he divorced and moved to Texas where he met me. Now wouldn't it be the ultimate TWILIGHT ZONE episode if THAT Donna had family members in the NJ area and she was named after some OTHER Donna Martin who in fact turned out to be YOUR Donna Martin? ;~)

I could eat capon or caramels, but will forego the capers. ☺ Thanks for dropping by The Doglady's Den recently.
ReplyDeleteHi Debbie and welcome to my blog! Lol, I'm not so interested in capers either...;~)
