FESTIVAL WEEKEND UPDATE!

It was a wild and wonderful time this past Saturday at the 10th annual Children's Festival of Reading. This was my third year of offering my FREE AUTHOR PROMOTION booth at the festival and the crowds were as big as ever. Even the weather was in my favor. Since I'm allergic to the sun, I know working this festival is always a bit hard on me but this past weekend Mother Nature was kind to me...cloudy and a high of 60 was right up my alley!

Authors like Michael Buckley, Chris Grabenstein, Andrea & Brian Pinkney, Laura Veccaro Seeger, Carmen Agra Deedy, and Toni Buzzeo were on hand to chat with the kids and autograph books. There was six performance stages, a Science Village, a Kids in the Kitchen area, 50 community booths, food, music, storytelling and there I was, smack dab in the middle of all the action.

My booth was like a three ring circus and here are pictures to prove it! At one table kids could decorate silly bookmarks on their own and register for the free book giveaway. At another table kids could see all the wonderful books that were donated by generous authors all over the world. The third table had all the free bookmarks, posters, postcards, magnets, stickers and other swag items I had been sent. I had teachers coming up to me and asking if they could take enough bookmarks for all their students and of course, I said yes!

Susanna's board books were the winners again this year with the younger kids and the parents loved all the adventure or mystery novels I had on hand, but the number one attraction on Saturday seemed to be Penny Lockwood's book BOO'S BAD DAY.  More often than not anyone walking up to the table would pick up that book first and thumb through it before grabbing a bookmark or registering for the drawing.

My booth sat across from delicious food tents like hot dogs, pizza, smoked sausages, popcorn, funnel cakes...you name it and I could smell it! Funny thing about it though is the fact I never had a chance to even try any of it because I stayed busy talking to people from about 9:30 that morning until the festival ended at 3 pm. I left my sister in charge only long enough to LITERALLY run a circle around World's Fair Park so I could take some pictures and have a bathroom break.

This is what one aisle of tents looked like from my booth just minutes before the festival opened for the crowds. I haven't read the numbers yet, but I'm pretty sure despite the chilly weather there were still 12-15,000 people attending the weekend festivities.

Look who led the Parade of Books this year...Llama Llama! To the left of him was the mascot chicken from the Tennessee Valley Fair...another event drawing thousands of people to my city each year in September.

Here is one of my students and the daughter of a local author as she carries a placard advertising THE CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON in the Parade of Books.

Of course I HAD to take a picture of Sudipta's cute book CHICKS RUN WILD!

Not too far from my booth and certainly within listening distance was one of the author performance stages. While I didn't get a chance to actually attend one of these talks, I could hear the wonderful chats and story performances going on...even got to see one of the illustrators show off their talent...all from a distance but the crowds sure looked like they were enjoying it!

This is probably one of my favorite booths at the festival. Every year there is a company who brings in their inflatable "pets" for the children to buy. I saw chickens, ladybugs, dogs, cats, dinosaurs, pigs...you name it and they probably had them. The pets were helium balloons but had those crinkly feet so the animals could bounce along the ground after it's "owner".

Here authors are getting ready to sign their books. There would be six authors at these tables at one time and you could get in line and go from one to another...taking pictures, having your books autographed, chatting with them. It was so cool to see the kids get so excited when they realized they were seeing a real, live AUTHOR sitting in front of them!

Every year I promise myself I will make time to visit THIS booth and every year I don't make it. This is the new and used book tent which supports our local library.  They sell those books for between 50 cents up to about 3 dollars. With a limited budget like I have I could make a killing buying tons of books there but I never have the time...lol...

Well, there you have it...another successful festival weekend and all I can say is thank you, thank you, thank you to all my author friends who were so generous with their autographed books and other swag items.  I honestly don't know if my FREE AUTHOR PROMOTION helps increase sales of the donated books but what I DO know is thousands of people got a chance to see those books at my booth on Saturday. All day long parents kept telling me how their children love to read books and I saw the excitement on the children's faces when they would pick up one of those books and thumb through them like they had discovered some magical treasure.  THAT is why I am a writer and I hope one day a child will have that same look on their face when they hold one of MY books in their hands.

Pictures, Anyone?

After weeks of fighting my phone AND my digital camera, I've finally managed to get some of the pictures I took from last month's Children's Festival of Reading to load on my old Mac laptop.  There are more but unfortunately every time I try to load them, they are standing on their heads!

This first photo is of the lovely Sudipta Bardhan-Quallen and local author, Jennifer Madison.  Jennifer donated some autographed books to my booth last year, we got to talking, and now her two children are my students at my TaeKwonDo school.

This is one shot of the long table where I displayed all the lovely books donated to this event.

Here is another shot of donated books.  The people that stopped by loved being able to have a hands-on experience with the autographed items.

Here is a view in one direction from my booth of the festival just at it was beginning...

And another one...

Here's one of the characters milling around to visit with the children...

One of the local radio station's mascot, Buzby.

I think this young fan was surprised to see Curious George!

I'm not sure who this character is, but the kids sure liked him!

I feel badly that I can't load the rest of my pictures from my digital camera to my laptop without them being upside down.  If any of my readers know how to correct this, please comment here or private message me so I can hopefully get the rest of the pictures out for everyone to see.  Thanks again to all the wonderful authors and illustrators who participated in this year's event.  It was my pleasure to help the over 12,000 people who attended this year's event connect with your lovely books!

Until next year...;~)

Second Annual Free Authors' Promotion

(courtesy of Knox County Public Library)

A view from the Sunsphere at this year's Children's Festival of Reading

Last weekend was my second annual FREE AUTHORS' PROMOTION event at my city's Children's Festival of Reading.  I thought last year's event was amazing but I was blown away by this year's participants.  I ended up with 49 authors and over 1000 autographed items for my FREE GIVEAWAY!

It was rainy and muddy when I was trying to set up my booth (if you look at the line of smaller tents on the right side of the photo above, my booth was the blue one at the beginning of the row in the back.  I was right across from the author signing booth and could literally wave at Sudipta if I would have had the time.

Despite the overcast clouds, over 12,000 people made it to the festival and I didn't even have time for a potty break as people were constantly stopping by to either register for the free books, pick up the signed swag items, or do the crafts I provided.  The hits at the booth obviously included the books (Susanna Leonard Hill, the little ones fought over your flap books again...;~), the older kids liked the  autographed bookmarks the most and parents loved Julie Hedlund's story app bookmark.

Just a note for new authors wondering about marketing budgets and what to invest in.  At my booth the business cards, magnets, and large postcards weren't as popular as regular bookmarks, stickers, and Romelle Boas' Casey Chameleon bookmarks with the gummy lizards she attached to them were an absolute hit!

Thanks to everyone who sent me things to display at my booth...I had members of my TKD Street Team handing out cards all over the festival grounds and your lovely bookmarks and postcards are now in the hands of hopefully new fans of your work!

Below are pictures of some of the fun that went on all day long!

The Awards Are Piling UP...

LG from WRITING OFF THE EDGE ( http://lgkeltner.blogspot.com/ ) has honored me with "The Booker Award". It is given to a blog that spends 50% or more on the craft of writing or talking about books...and I certainly think I qualify for THAT award...lol...so on this Teaser Tuesday I will give you five of my all time favorite books but first...the rules of the award:

1.  This award is for book bloggers only.  To receive this award the blog must be at least 50% about books...either reading or writing about them.

2.  You must share your top five favorite books you have ever read.

3.  You must give this award to 5 other lucky book blogs you enjoy.

So here my top five:

1.  The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein.  How is it possible for one man to put SO MUCH emotion and spirit into a book with almost stick drawings and a few words?  I should be so lucky as to grow to have a talent like that!

2.  A Tale Of Two Cities by Charles Dickens.  This story was required reading during my high school years and it left a profound love of the classics on my spirit.

3.  Silas Marner by George Eliot.  Another required reading by my high school English teacher where I would sit in his classroom and follow along as he played a record of the book for us to listen to...it certainly added to my enjoyment of the book to be immersed in the sounds of the actor's voices.

4.  Truly...anything by Mercer Mayer.  I cut my teeth on Mercer Mayer books...I grew up with him, joined in the adventures with him, and felt a little bit better about life in general after having read his books.

5.  Mine-o-saur by Sudipta Bardhan-Quallen.  Every summer I read this book to my students at my Summer Adventure Camp as it is a fun lesson in how to be nice and share with others.

and a bonus:

6.  My Lucky Day by Keiko Kasza.  I absolutely LOVE this story.  I love the little piglet...his craftiness, how he outsmarts those around him and it's just a GREAT feel good book!

Now...instead of passing out this award to just a few of the wonderful book blogs I read everyday...I thought I would just ask MY readers to give me THEIR top five favorite books.  I just might find a reason to add some more cool books to my collection!

Calling All Authors...Part Two!

I have gotten such a great response so far with the shout out for autographed children's books (PB, MG, YA fiction and nonfiction), that I thought I would run one more post explaining how I am showcasing and promoting other authors' works as my way of saying thank you for being so supportive in this wonderful writing community!

Some of you have heard about the Children's Festival of Reading that is coming to my city on Saturday, May 19th.  If you haven't, you can check out the link here http://knoxrooms.sirsi.net/rooms/portal/page/21676_Childrens_Festival_of_Reading.  I have been invited to have a booth where I am going to showcase any of my author friends who want to send me an autographed copy of their books or anything else they want to autograph...i.e. bookmarks, posters, pictures, etc. as free giveaways.

I have been receiving packages almost daily and I know some more are on their way, but there is still time to participate if you would like to!  I'm also asking all my readers to help me get the word out to THEIR author friends so that I can have the best booth at the festival!  And if you give this blog post a shout-out, your name will be put in a drawing for some prizes
( http://www.donasdays.blogspot.com/2012/03/time-for-another-giveaway.html ).  Anyone interested in more information can email me at tkd2lady (at) yahoo (dot) com.  They don't have to be newly published books and e-book authors can autograph bookmarks, posters, postcards, etc for a chance for me to promote their books as well.

Here is the list of authors so far who have been so generous with their books and swag items:

Susanna Leonard Hill
Sudipta Bardhan-Quallen
Salina Yoon
Tammi Sauer
Keiko Kasza
Heather Newman (illiustrator)

Alayne Kay Christian
Genevieve Petrillo
Nancy Smiler Levinson
Diane Dawson Hearn
Sarah Frances Hardy
Vivian Kirkland
Lisa M Cottroll-Bentley

I think the festival committee will be quite surprised when I let them know what I'm gonna have at MY booth...;0)
