Title: A Is For Abigail
Author: Lynne Cheney
Illustrator: Robin Preiss Glasser
Publisher: Simon & Schuster
Ages: 9-11
"A is for ABIGAIL ADAMS, who knew that women should be heard."
Synopsis: While there are many history books dedicated to the accomplishments of American men over the ages, there are plenty of American women who have, sometimes quietly and sometimes with explosive results, also made lasting contributions to their country. A IS FOR ABIGAIL takes a peak at some of those brave women who sacrificed much to follow their dream of making America a land of opportunity for all.
Why I liked it: I have always been fascinated with history and historical figures. The pages are full of wonderful illustrations crammed full of historical facts. It's a great book for homeschoolers as well as anyone just wanting to know more about the incredible lives of some amazing American women.
Hi Donna .. a great starting point to find out more ... and a great present to give a child ...A for Abigail - sounds a good read and a good knowledge base ..

Wonderful post. I absolutely agree about women being overlooked and oppressed in history.
ReplyDeleteHi Tonja! Isn't it wonderful there are books like this one to show the next generation the heros they can become?

An excellent theme, and what looks a great set of books! I'll admit that almost my entire knowledge of Abigail Adams comes from the "John Adams" mini-series, but even that small glimpse showed me a strong and admirable woman.
ReplyDeleteHi Shayne and welcome to my blog! I've added this great book to my collection so I will have plenty of time to study all the nuggets of information waiting to be uncovered inside...;~)

Sounds like a great book...and Abigail Adams is right - women SHOULD be heard! I may think about including this book in our homeschool lessons.

Great post and I'm interested in seeing what you come up with throughout the month. That's a lot of book reviews! Good luck!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Philip, and welcome to my blog! I quite literally read through hundreds of books just to get the 26 I actually reviewed...;~)

This sounds like a good one! I'll consider it as a gift in the future. My daughter is 16 and was a early lover of books. I discovered her re-reading the BFG a few days ago! Her copy is well worn and must have been read through at least five times over the years. She discovered it in second grade and still laughs out loud!
ReplyDeleteHi and welcome to my blog! Don't you love reading a great story over and over...kinda like visiting with an old friend!

That looks like a very sweet book. :)
ReplyDeleteAlex Hurst, fantasy author in Japan. "B is for Books" is my current post.
HI Alex and welcome to my blog! It was certainly a challenge coming up with some of my books to start with the right letter of the alphabet, but such fun in the hunt! ;~)

ReplyDeleteHi Laura and welcome to my blog! Oh, I LOVE your "B" selection for the A to Z Challenge...board games...one of my favorite things to do when I can find someone to join me. My cat, Tommy, doesn't play too well...he keeps wanting to eat the pieces...;~)
