Truffles Anyone?

There are few things I love more than mushrooms...well, maybe chicken but that's another story for another day. Mushrooms are the poor man's pretend protein. It's earthy smell is the foundation of many a meal in my home and yesterday was no different. I was dicing up another cup of mushrooms when I stopped to think about how important this little fungi is to my life.

Some mushrooms are at the bottom of the gourmet line.  Simple. Basic. You know what you have and where you are going with them whenever you open up the container and dig in.  Kinda like some books.  Simple. Basic. Not a lot of meat to the story but still okay. Something you might taste once but then again thirty minutes later you might not even remember what the meal...or book...was all about.

But then you have those top of the line gourmet mushrooms.  You know the ones.  Black truffles found mainly in the forests between France and Switzerland and costing sometimes $1,000 or more per pound.  Truffles are considered one of the world's most expensive foods.  Like a perfect story, it can enrich and add flavor to the lives of anyone who indulges in those hard to find delicacies.

Writers who strive to entice the reading palette of their audience with rich stories full of character, tension, and voice will most assuredly command top dollar in the gourmet publishing market. For myself, I've started with the basics but one day...yes, one day...I too will create magic with the finest ingredients I can bring to the table and oh, what a tasty treat that will be!

  1. Hi Donna - this analogy is a good one and mushrooms are so varied - let alone truffles .. I prefer plain simple mushrooms and those big ones that I can stuff and make into a meal in one ..

But can easily see here what you're trying to achieve .. good luck with your internship in the mushroom fields of writing ...

    Happy writing .. cheers Hilary

  2. I love mushrooms. I have never tasted truffles. If they taste any better than mushrooms, I don't think I could stand it.
On the other hand, I enjoy both when it comes to books--mushroom and truffle.

  3. I don't like mushrooms, but I think I would try Black Truffles. Excellent analogy, as always.

  4. Interesting way to put this. I can agree, to get to gourmet, you must start somewhere. Simple and basic is a good start :-)

  5. Basic is a great start. That being said, I ALWAYS think what I write is magic. Sad testament, since I'm usually the only one! :)
