Flash Fiction Friday

The Fairie Tale Ball
by Donna L Martin

Pippin's wings twitched with excitement as she made last minute preparations.  She had waited many moons for Tamari to finally tell her she had been picked to attend the Fairie Tale Ball.  Only the smartest and quickest young fairies were chosen each year and now it was Pippin's turn.  There would be dancing to Ardan's magical flute with sweet honey and nectar cakes to nibble on for dessert.

Her hands brushed nervously over her petal skirt.  Would she remember the ancient words of celebration?  What if she couldn't fly, even with the help of Tamari's pixie dust?  There had been rumors of such a thing happening at one of the balls in years past...way before Pippin's time, but butterflies still tumbled in her stomach at the thought of disappointing the elders.

Glancing at the full moon peeking out from behind the treetops, Pippin realized she would be late and quickly ran to the meadow.  It was nearly time for the ball to begin and Tamari didn't like to be kept waiting...

***Okay, it's your turn!  What happens at the Fairie Tale Ball?  Does Pippin manage to fly?  What are they celebrating?  Put your creative cap on and add a sentence or add a paragraph.  Continue my story or start one of your own.  Join the fun and see where this picture prompt takes us!***

  1. Having tried a couple of other hops/prompts lately I really wanted to give this a go. Unfortunately fairies are not my speciality (I caught my mum putting a coin under my pillow with the loss of my very first tooth). I wasn't impressed with the tooth fairy anyway, I had a nasty habit of swallowing mine and the fairy always wanted the ivory up front.

To be honest I looked at what you wrote and thought anything I added would cheapen it. You set the bar so high with your expressive imagination.

    1. JP, it may have been different for Donna, but my brother and I thought it was Mighty Mouse who brought the money.

    2. Awwww, JP, don't worry about it. You should know by now I write about a lot of different topics so there will be other chances. I'm blushing from your kind words...even though I think you are being a wee bit "creative" yourself with your high praise of my story prompts...;~)

Thanks for stopping by and come back any time!

  2. Donna, I saw a fairy mound one Sunday morning when I passed a park on my way to fetch a newspaper. It was gone when I passed the park returning home. I was about 38 years old at the time. I KNOW what I saw.

Sorry, I have nothing to offer your story. But I would like to see the illustrations of the party.

    1. Well, Janet, I saw things flying around our house one night but I don't really think fairies had much to do with THAT! ;~)

  3. I think that Pippin will trip and fall, get pretty scuffed up. But she will arrive on time at the ball. She flies without a problem because she had been distracted by her scrapes and didn't worry about flying.

I also believe in fairies. We lived in Ireland and saw fairy rings. Don't mess with 'em.

  4. I believe in faeries, but not the tooth fairy. Serious fairies. Elementals, Warriors, Munks (Faerie for "Peace-makers/Mind-calmers"), etc. I love the story, but don't find any inspiration for me to continue. Other than that it is a normal ball where humans dress up and 2-4 fairies go to it and act like humans.
