Flash Fiction Friday

Stuck In A Tunnel
by Donna L Martin

Light was beginning to filter through the treetops  as Willie sniffed the ground by the old oak tree.  Standing strong for years, the decaying trunk now nestled into the dirt and was home for Willie's favorite early morning meal.  Turning his head to one side to stare at the tree, Willie thought about how he could get to the tasty larvae buried deep in the hollowed out tunnel.

"Just enough room for my head" said Willie. "Breakfast is almost here."

Scratching his tusks on the rough bark, Willie pushed his head further and further into the opening until he could almost reach the grubs.

"Just a little more," said Willie.

Stretching out his tongue, Willie wrapped it around a couple of grubs and began backing out of the tunnel.  Oh no! He was stuck! No matter how much he twisted and turned, poor Willie was stuck in the tunnel of the tree and couldn't get out!

"What am I going to do?" thought Willie. "How am I going to get out of here?"

Just then he felt a little tap, tap, tapping on his back.  Who could it be?

***Okay, it's your turn!  What happens next?  How does Willie get free?  And who is tap, tap, tapping?  Put your creative cap on and add a sentence or add a paragraph.  Continue my story or start one of your own.  Join the fun and see where this picture prompt takes us!***

  1. "Who is it?" asked Willie.
"Don't you know?" came the voice.

Willie thought long and hard did he recognise the voice, he couldn't think who it could be.
"I've no idea, I've got my head stuck and can't move"
"It's just not been your day has it?" said the voice as Willie felt his wallet being taken from his pocket.

    2. If you insist....

Just when Willie had all but given up hope of getting free he heard a mischievous giggle. It wasn't exactly a giggle, more a hehehehehehe in a gibberish he recognised. It was Chuckles the irritating little spider-monkey. What good was he?
"Chuckles go and get the Happy Hippo to help me" Willie pleaded.

Chuckles just chuckled and a look of devilment spread over his cheeky face. He began to tickle Willie. Within seconds was laughing uncontrollably and thrashing around.
"Oh no don't, that tickles! Please! Stop!"

Then Willie's head popped out of the hole in the tree.
"Thank you Chuckles I'll never be mean to you again"

Thoughts of breakfast were gone, Willie needed a drink. He decided to go to the Shady Watering Hole run by Happy Hippo as he approached the bar Happy smiled.
"You look out of sorts Willie, whatya having?"
"De-salinated water, easy on the sludge please"

Willie leaned on the over-hanging, almost horizontal tree that was the bar and looked around. He saw a Porcupine sat with his back to him chatting to a hyena.
"I'm Porky don't you know who I am?"

'I know that voice!' thought Willie.
      "Thief!" he called out.
"Who said that?" the porcupine bristled.

He turned and saw Willie then became decidedly nervous............

  3. Hi Donna .. I'd say it was Mrs Wasp - who decided to give Mr Warthog a wee bite .. which projected Mr W into a frothy agonising dance, the branch started to disintegrate ... releasing more little ants and grubs ... and Mr W was free, a quick shake off ... a rub of his backside against the busted trunk to scratch that 'd**n' sting .. and then he settled down to a good lunch of grubs ...

Cheers - I love warthogs .. I have pictures, cushion cover, and candle here .. not many - I don't like dusting!! Hilary
