Twas An Eve Before Publishing...

Twas An Eve Before Publishing
By Donna L Martin

Twas an eve before publishing,
And when all throughout my house,
I’d just finished a story
About a cat and a mouse.

Next year would be busy
With many stories to write,
But what if I’m not published,
Tho I try hard as I might?

I shut down my old laptop
And turned off the light,
When suddenly a noise
Rang out in the night.

I rushed to my front door
To sneak a peek outside,
There stood an old wizard
With a donkey named Clyde.

He said his name was Berlin
And he came bearing a gift
Of a new Mac computer
And bags he could scarcely lift.

He asked could he come inside,
And get out of the harsh cold?
Well, I gladly let him in
After the story he told.

He was going to Vegas
To try his luck with the dice,
But got lost near the North Pole
And met a dude who was nice.

“I’ll help you get to Vegas,
Make a stop along the way.
I don’t have time to visit
The Martins by Christmas Day!”

Then Berlin opened his sack
While books spilled onto the floor.
Lots of writer references,
Author stories I adore.

“Here's all the magic you need
To make the right dreams come true.
It takes belief in yourself.
Hard work. It's all up to you!”

The wizard smiled, turned to go
Out into the winter night.
But I heard words softly said
As I turned off the porch light.

“Good luck in the coming year,
With a book contract or two.
Should you run into that dude,
Clyde wants a blanket in blue!”

  1. That absolutely made me smile. I will go through the day with this grin and love it. Thanks for the wonderful and encouraging poem.

May you have a Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, may your publishing dreams come true and that Clyde gets his blanket in blue :-)

  2. You're very welcome, Angela! Merry Christmas to you as well! I wrote that early this morning after I had been up almost 24 hours straight so I'm actually surprised it makes the writer in me already sees problems with the meter but its all in good fun...;-)

Thanks for stopping by and come back any time!

  3. Nippin at the eggnog early? I love the poem.

    1. Thanks, Janet! Nope, just baking my Ninja Bread Men and sipping on hot tea while I finish up last minute things for tonight. Didn't get to sleep until after 1 a.m. this morning so it's a wonder I could type anything! ;-)

Thanks for stopping by and come back any time!

  4. aww... this is lovely, very cute! Thankyou! Merry Christmas to you to, my friend.
ps.. slip a little something extra in that eggnog of yours... *wink*

    1. Awww, Diane, if only I could...but it's only "virgin" eggnog in my future...;~)

Thanks for stopping by and come back any time!

  5. This is too cute, Donna! I have a wonderful feeling about is going to be a GREAT year for this wonderful kid-lit community. Did you hear about Alayne Kay Christian's Sub Six? Check it out if you haven''s going to be all about encouraging us to submit 6 picture book manuscripts in the coming year.
Have a beautiful Christmas and a Happy, Healthy, Joyful and Successful New Year!

    1. Hi Vivian! I have a great feeling about 2013 as well! Now I just have to work hard ant getting everything ready in time! Yes, I've heard of Alayne's new group and I asked her if it covered ALL genres...waiting for her answer...
