As a child growing up in 70's, I got a chance to watch some shows with a pretty interesting twist on the lives of the sitcom characters. Shows like Movin' On Up might not play so well to today's viewers, but back then it was amusing to see how one African American family adjusted to life in the fast, well-to-do lane of upper middle class society.
For myself, I'm thinking of a different twist on the Movin' On Up theme...one which will expand my support system and give me a chance to continue to give back to this wonderful writing community. I have had some more lovely people decide they would like to follow this post, and I am now only 39 people away from hitting my 300-follower mark. While it amazes me to think these many people like my posts, it keeps me humble and focused on trying to provide the most inspiring, entertaining, fun posts that I can.
There is still time to join the fun of my latest blog contest (for details, hop over here... http://donasdays.blogspot.com/2012/08/its-that-time-again.html) where you can get your name added to the hat to win a bevy of books for either the writer or reader in you. I will be drawing the winning names on Thursday, September 6th. As I get closer and closer to that magic number I wonder if I will make it? December 6th is still a few months away and maybe I will be blessed with being able to add a new badge to my blog wall...
At the rate you're going, I'm sure you will! :)
ReplyDeleteHi Susanna! Thanks for your kind words...it would be nice but I want ALL my followers to be happy with my posts...no matter how many I end up with...;0)

Hey Donna. Thanks for dropping by my blog. Congrats on almost making 300 followers, I'm sure you'll get the other 39 in no time at all. :D
ReplyDeleteI see from your sidebar you're a CaMp NaNoWriMo participant. Did you do it in June or are you doing it in August? I'd love to know how you got on/ are getting on. :D
Hi Clare and welcome to my blog! I tried to participate in August and add to my current WIP...a young adult fantasy called Lunadar: Homeward Bound but life keeps seeming to get in the way...I also help run a martial arts school full time which keeps me busy about 60 hours a week...then a girl's gotta sleep sometime...;~)

300 is a GREAT number. SO exciting. Cupcake is still clawing her way to 100.
ReplyDeleteAwwww, Genevieve, your Cupcake is such a sweetie...it's a wonder she hasn't hit ONE THOUSAND followers by now! ;~)

If you have time--"The Emperor of Ocean Park" by Stephen Carter is a wonderful book about a Black middle to upper class family with a mystery thrown in. I loved the book because finally there was a book out there that talked about the backgrounds of academic and political Black families. Stephen Carter is a law professor at Yale. This was his first novel for which he received a 4 million dollar advance. I have read this book several times, usually I never read a popular book again. It might help in your writing to give you this point of view. He is a Christian and conservative.
ReplyDeleteHi Loverofwords! That sounds like an interesting book...I will need to add it to my "to read" list! ;~)

Hi, Donna! Thanks for dropping by and for following me back. My avatar is way back in your Follower collage. When I come across a LA's blog that's interesting, like yours, I try to follow. But, awhile back, I didn't realize my blog couldn't be accessed thru my avatar *red with embarassment* and getting connected fades. I'm delighted all's worked out.
ReplyDeleteloved reading about the songs that lulled you to sleep as a child. When hub and I were in LA in May, we visited friends near St. Francisville. In one of the little shops there was a thin book with songs/lullabies/poems sung/read to kids through the decades that brought back memories. I really wanted that book, but had already bought other books at Rosedown and we had to fly back to VA with just our carry on! Next time, right? I treasure the books I haul back -- hmmm, maybe I should have paid more attention during that Louisiana History course, LOL!
Have you seen Marguerite's blog (cajundelights.blogspot.com)? She's from the Lafayette area, posts her amazing recipes along with clips of Cajun music (Henderson Landing) and other tid bits. And, there are 5,000 LSU grads in the D.C. area (where I live now, for a bit longer), along with lots from our other universities. Once a year, a vendor drives up with the fixins for a real crawfish boil. YUM! Love that taste of home!
Awww, Kittie, you make me envious! What i wouldn't do for a good crawfish boil or even better some tasty boudoin! When I lived in Dallas, I actually made arrangements with a company from Shreveport who would deliver to some restaurants in Dallas to meet me at a truck stop outside of town and I would buy a bag of crawfish off the truck before they made their regular deliveries...;~)
DeleteI will have to check out Marguerite's blog...used to live in Lafayette (born and raised 50 miles south of there) and listening to Zydeco brings back childhood memories...
Thanks for stopping by and come back any time!
