There once was a saying..."A penny for your thoughts"...as if to say that was all they were worth. Then people started throwing pennies into fountains for good luck and making wishes on them. I say people didn't put enough value on those thoughts back then, so I have come up with a new saying..."A dollar for your dreams"...
Writers are full of dreams so why not give them true value? And if dreams are where all the story book magic begins, then why not ask for something one hundred times better that what we have gotten in the past? Writers today have it tough. We dream big and then go to the wishing well and throw our pennies in...hoping to get an agent...hoping to get a book offer...hoping to become successful at this career which can sometimes frustrate while still driving us to constantly improve ourselves.
Sometimes writers fear the well will dry up or freeze over and what will we do then? I think we have nothing to worry about. The world is full of dreamers and the ideas that spark the next great story lay all around us. We just need to keep our eyes and ears open for the wonderful possibilities out there. And we need to continue to dream big. Not just penny-worth...let's make it one hundred times bigger and dream a dollar's worth...and yeah, lets get a bigger wishing well!
I'm feeling in need of a massive wishing well. We can but keep trying. :)
ReplyDeleteHi, Rebecca, and welcome to my blog! I'm planning on wishing big, dreaming big, and working hard to make my dreams come true!

ReplyDeleteHi Donna! I am honored that you thought it "tweet-worthy"...lol...maybe we can start a grassroots movement to inspire new writers to value themselves more? ;0)

I like the old sayings about pennies, but it's time to stop minting them. It costs nearly two cents to make one penny. Canada is stopping production at the end of 2012.
ReplyDeleteHi, Stephen! Really? So now I wonder how long it will take for all the pennies already produced to be used up and will there ever come a day when there are no more pennies available? What does one do then when something costs $1.99? Round up? ;0)

Funny...how it really reflects so many things other than writing. I am a follower and enjoy your posts. Although I am not a writer I find meaning in my life from your words.Keep up the great work!!
ReplyDeleteHi Robyn! I'm putting a Capital B in dream Big! Thanks for you inspiring post Donna. If only the agents would visit the wishing wells. LOL
ReplyDeleteHi Cheryl! I think the agents already visit the well...they are wishing for writers who study their craft and do their best work before they submit their stories...;0)

I remember when I was writing my first WIP, feeling panicky and asking myself if I'd think of another. I can look back at that and laugh now, because I always have more ideas than I do time. Great post!

So howcum the expression has always been to offer "a penny for your thoughts", but when we offer an opinion, we're putting in our "TWO cents' worth?" (In light of inflation, I think my thoughts are worth at least three cents.)
ReplyDeleteHi, Susan, and welcome to my blog! Ahahaha...I never thought of that! Glever girl...;0)

I gave up on wishing for a time (although there are no atheists on a sinking ship) largely because my father said 'Heaven helps those who help themselves'. It took me a while to realise it was more a case of 'Heaven help those who help themselves'.
ReplyDeleteI can see the difference between the two. I'm afraid I probably would not have gotten along with your father very well...I hope you have come to the realization that both wishes and dreams are what helps keep our spirits alive...;-)

LOL I didn't get along with him either until it was nearly too late. It took me a long time to realise it was the only way he knew and genuinely believed it to be the correct way.
DeleteI inherited his pragmatism in that I believe dreams need a little help but spirit is something that cannot be taught. I don't doubt I have spirit because if I hadn't I wouldn't be writing this now.
I will get something in print before too long and I will make sure you get an autographed first edition :D
JP, you honor me with your wish to send me an autographed first edition...funny thing, I KNOW you will become a published author one day...I've read a lot of your blog posts, remember? ;0)
