Leap Of Faith

Have you every jumped into something before and you really didn't know what you were doing?  Things just didn't feel right?  I kind of felt like that last January when I returned to writing after a 20 year absence.  The urge to write was still there, but everything else was so new and confusing to me that I felt like I was about to jump into unknown waters.  I tried to do what I had done years before but like that poor polar bear, I got stuck.

Sometimes a writer steps out on a solitary journey to see where the characters of their story take them.  Other times that writer is given a friendly push to take that first of leap of faith into unknown waters.  My  first story last year was a fledgling attempt to call myself a writer.  I floundered, barely kept myself afloat and had many doubts about whether I could come back to my writing.  Then I met so many wonderful friends through the November PiBoIdMo challenge.  Writers like myself who pushed me further into those unknown waters and even swam with me when my courage weakened.

Because of the wisdom and continual support of my new writer colleagues, I have learned to navigate those unknown waters.  Expectations and requirements of writers these days have changed, but I took the advice of many experienced authors who came before me and who were willing to coach me.  I learned quickly.  Now my leaps of faith into those waters come from a higher, stronger place inside me.  A place where I swim with the confidence of knowing I DO have the ability to become a good writer.  That I DO have it within me to create something that one day might encourage others to test the writing waters themselves.

Won't you take that leap of faith in yourself?  To go where you have never gone before?  To test the waters of your own writing experiences and to allow that voice inside you to come out and play?  Come on...take that leap...the water feels great!

  1. I like the title, LEAP OF FAITH. I hadn't really thought of it like that before, but I guess I agree. I absolutely agree with your phrase: TO GO WHERE YOU HAVE NEVER GONE BEFORE.... testing the waters of your own writing and allowing the inner you to take control of the keyboard.

Good thoughts to read and share! Thank you.

  2. Wow! this resonated with me...... I took a leap of faith a few years ago when after I had written my novel, just a first draft mind you, and sent it to an editor to see what would happen, thinking it would end up in a rubbish bin. What a surprise it was for me, the email I received back. Keep an eye out on my blog, she is going to be appearing as a guest speaker in a couple of weeks.
Thanks for this inspiring post Donna.

You do, indeed. And you're doing so daily.

  6. Donna, a very inspiring post. Leap of faith -- believe we're all on that journey. Putting ourselves out there not knowing, but only believing.

  7. I have taken that leap of faith, and I've never been happier. I'm glad you're taking it too - with us! The writing community makes it a lot easier and a lot less scary.

  8. Thank you, Beth, for your kind words! If anything I write were to ever encourage someone to travel the same path I am on now, I would feel truly blessed to have helped in some way for them to see a greater side of themselves...

  10. Thanks, Patricia! I'm a firm believer that we are our own harshest critics and it is our own mindset that sometimes prevents ourselves from growing as a writer.

  11. Julie...I agree. I read a lot of blog posts each day as well as FB comments and I realize I'm not the only one who has doubts or struggles or soaks in the joy of each completed story. And it certainly is fun to share in the excitement of each other's successes as well! Thanks for stopping by...
